A Visit to Ladybug Organic Coffee Company

In addition to dropping by the Laurelwood Brewery on our first day in Portland, we also made a visit to Ladybug Organic Coffee Company, which is located on the opposite end of town in Northwest Portland. To many, Seattle is the coffee capital of the US, but coffee culture is equally -- if not more -- vibrant in Portland.

Ladybug opened in May, 2007, and it was put on the map in December, when the New York Times published an article about the five-page barista applications issued by owner Angel O’Brien. However, most of the customers are still regulars from the neighborhood, she says.

In a recent application for the City of Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability BEST award, Angel described how she sources local and organic foods and beverages:

We purchase ingredients as locally as possible, we buy flour from Bob’s Red Mill in Milwaukee, we use milk, eggs, butter, etc. that are from a family farm in Washington, we use local honey from Glory Bee Foods in Eugene. We put an emphasis on using seasonal produce that we get from Sauvie Island Organics, Organically Grown Company and from the farmers market. We are all organic, everything from the coffee, tea, milk and sugar to the pastries, bagels and the eggs Benedict.

We tried a latte and a handful of delicious pastries at Ladybug. You can keep track of what's going on at Ladybug by following their blog, and be sure to check out Angel's Flickr photos.

Hello 'LadyBug' Angel! I've read your posts for some time on SCAA forum, and began Twittering about you. Organic
National asked for contact info and I gave it to them. Although we have never met, I feel such respect for you, what
you have gone through and your vision of all organic/biodegradable/sustainability! In our much lesser way, we are
doing small things on that road. Please come visit us if you are ever in Temecula, CA.
