AP: Organic Sales Slipping in 2009

It's obviously far too early to close the book on 2009, but according to an AP article, "Going 'All Natural' Gets Old: Organics Faltering," sales of certified-organic foods are expected to drop for the first time this decade.
The only evidence of declining sales cited in the article comes from the Chicago-based research firm Mintel, which says that "sales in the U.S. of organic foods sold mostly at supermarkets are expected to drop 1.1 percent to $5.07 billion this year." The AP article also checks in with certifying organizations in Wisconsin and California, where officials say that farmers are surrendering their certifications in greater numbers than before.
The news comes just two months after the Organic Trade Association trumpeted the news that organic food sales had grown by 15.8 percent in 2008.
