Buying Local at Rosemont Market and Bakery

One of the last stops we made before leaving Portland turned out to be one of the best, when our guides, Alex Steed and Zack Bowen, took us to the Rosemont Market and Bakery to get some provisions for the road. Portland has one of the best local food scenes in the country, and virtually everything that can be found in Rosemont Market was produced in Maine.

About a week before we drove up to Portland, the New York Times printed an article about some of the creative and innovative people contributing to Portland's burgeoning food scene. Portland "has become one of the best places to eat in the Northeast," according to the article, largely because of the great local ingredients that can be found in Maine.

"The city is ringed by farms, fishing grounds, dairies, apiaries, mushroom beds and smokehouses, making local lamb, potatoes, scallops, bacon, buttermilk, berries and honey easy to get."

During our visit to Rosemont Market and Bakery we picked up a baguette and a big piece of Echo Ridge organic coulommier cheese for the road (some of the best cheese I've ever tasted), some honey, and a bottle of local HoneyMaker mead from Maine Mead Works (not for the road).

I've actually been saving that one for when we visit my parents in Buffalo, so I'll be able to tell you tomorrow!
