NYTimes: Summer Jobs Go Organic

In a story that will appear on page A1 of the Sunday edition of the New York Times tomorrow, Kim Severson reports that a wave of liberal arts students from around the country will be interning at organic farms this summer. Here's a passage from the article:

They come armed with little more than soft hands and dog-eared copies of Michael Pollan’s “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” which takes a dim view of industrial agriculture.

A few hope to run their own farms. Others plan to work on changing government food policy. Some are just looking for a break from the rigors of academia. But whatever the reason, the interest in summer farm work among college students has never been as high, according to dozens of farmers, university professors and people who coordinate agricultural apprenticeships.

It's a trend that we've been hearing more about recently. In fact, just this morning we were asking Gail Thorpe, owner of Thorpe's Organic Family Farm in East Aurora, NY, about what type of people work on her farm, and she said it's staffed mostly with students in the summer.

The Times also has a nice slide show of organic farmers.
