Organic Breakfast & Lunch at Chicago's Nana

It's been open for a few weeks already, but Dorothee and I, along with her brother Hans, finally made it down to Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood to check out Nana, a new family-owned breakfast and lunch spot that serves all organic and sustainable fare.

Before we placed our order we met the owner, Omar Solis, who told us that he actually grew up in the building, which is just around the corner from the White Sox stadium on a revitalized stretch of Halsted Street. Omar has ambitious plans for the building, including installing solar panels on the roof that would power an all-electric kitchen.

For now, we're just happy to have a place where we can get a good organic breakfast with some fresh juices. There are a number of places in Chicago where fresh juice can be found, but Nana is one of the only ones on my radar that serves organic juices, including wheat grass. For brunch, we ordered the popular baked chilaquiles, a breakfast skillet with salsa roja, and a spinach and beet salad.

Here's Nana's statment about how the food is sourced:

We source the finest or organic ingredients from farmers, producers and vendors who meet and maintain USDA National Organic Program standards. The products we use are free of synthetic preservatives, growth hormones, genetically modified ingredients, antibiotics, artificial colors and flavors and other additives and chemicals, including pesticides. We support the ethical treatment of animals, promote sustainability and buy local whenever possible.

From what I can tell, they've made a serious effort to source the best possible ingredients, but the best part is that they aren't preachy and it doesn't seem any more expensive than a typical, non-organic breakfast place. The crepes are $7; the omelets are $8; sandwiches are $8 or $9; and salads range from $9 to $12.

Below are a few photos of Dorothee's wheat grass shot and beet salad.
