We haven't been keeping up with the news as much while we've been on the road, but here's a roundup of some of the stories (most of them bad) that we've been following over the past week.
- Food and Water Watch warns the New Mexico's 340,000 dairy cows are ruining the state's water supply.
- Oil in the Gulf Coast is starting to reach Louisiana's fragile coastal marshes. Meanwhile, NOAA has closed more of the Gulf to fishing.
- Researchers from Harvard and the University of Montreal linked pesticide exposure in children to ADHD.
- Scientists in Ontario are trying to figure out why women raised on farms have a greater chance of getting breast cancer.
- The National Work Group for Safe Markets released "No Silver Lining: An Investigation into Bisphenol A in Canned Foods" and found BPA in 92 percent of the cans they tested. As my dad puts it, "it doesn't do much good to choose organic foods if they come packaged in material that leaches toxic substances."
- The New York Times profiles urban farming pioneer John Ameroso.
- Searching for sustainable seafood? Try abalone, the large, edible snails.
