Video: Recession Touches Organic Dairy Farming
Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 2:23PM This video report from New England Cable News does a pretty good job of explaining how the recession and market forces have created a difficult climate for organic dairy farmers. The video checks in with a couple of organic dairy farmers in Vermont that recently made the switch from conventional to organic. Although organic dairy farmers are suffering, farmers Brent and Regina Beidler say that conventional dairy farmers have it worse, as many are only receiving half of what they used to for their milk.
For more on the dairy crisis, read Part 1 and Part 2 of my recent interview with Cornucopia Institute co-founder Mark Kastel, who says that large factory-farm operations are partially to blame for the crisis, because they undercut prices that family farmers can get for dairy.
