Video: The White House Garden's Winter Harvest
Friday, March 26, 2010 at 12:01PM Here's a nice little video about the winter harvest at the White House garden that I found at the blog Obama Foodorama. As you'll recall, Sam Kass installed hoop houses last fall, and there with the heavy snowfall Washington received over the winter, there was concern that the hoop houses would be damaged.
The snow has melted, and beneath the covering Kass found what looks like a very nice harvest. The video also reveals that the garden will be expanded this spring.

Thats great to see. What I'm thinking though - and maybe it's headed that way - is that the white house needs a more robust landscape makeover - like food not lawns; no-till vegetable beds, a gigantic food forest, huge herb gardens, and perennial staple foods like Chestnuts & Hazelnuts, etcetera. Maybe we can get a permaculture designer over there to give them some advice?...
I wonder if the President makes alternative health medicine out of the herbs that grow in their organic garden. Well, that would take off some time from the in-house doctor, wouldn't it? So I guess not. But that would be a good thing, especially if made known to the public, because that's a notable practice worth imitating by the people. The prices of some of today's medicines are just so high that going for alternatives don't sound so alternative anymore.
